Ms. Versia Burgess of Washington, N.C. entered into eternal rest on October 21, 2023, at her home.
Versia Virginia Moore Burgess, daughter of the late Tiny A. Moore and Bessie J. Moore departed this earth and entered eternal life on October 21, 2023, surrounded by loved ones at her home on River Road, Washington, NC. She was affectionately called “Mother,” “Muth,” “Mommy” and “Baby Sis” by family and friends. She was “Grandma”, Great Grandma” and “MeMa” to her grandchildren. She was the 4th child of ten siblings and was preceded in death by her brother, Calvin Moore, and sisters Verna Moore, Eula M. Scales, and Geraldean Hawkins.
On May 19, 1955, she married Henry Champ Burgess, who preceded her in death on May 2, 2011. This union was blessed with 10 children. Versia was also preceded in death by three sons, Steven N. Burgess, William Burgess, and George Burgess.
She worked on the farm alongside her husband and children until they retired. She later returned to the workforce doing domestic work until her final retirement in 1999.
Versia was a faithful member of St. Luke Church of Christ Disciples of Christ and attended regularly until her health began to fail. She was a mother and Deaconess of the Church and served as President and Secretary of the Senior Usher Board. She was also instrumental in starting the youth usher ministry at the Church. Versia also enjoyed reading her Bible, listening to Gospel music and preaching on TV, quilting, sewing, watching Wheel of Fortune, and Family Feud, she also enjoyed whatever activities her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were doing.
She leaves to cherish her memory, five daughters, Verna Smith, Hampton, VA, Betsy (Alonzo) Windley, New Bern, NC, Victoria “Ann” Deas, Washington, NC, Callie (James) Brown, Plymouth, NC and Theresa (Benson) Wiggins, Williamston, NC, daughter in law, Gertrude Burgess, four sons, Willie “JT” Burgess, Rocky Mount, NC, Henry (Roberta) Burgess, Jr., Durham, NC, Kelly (Dorothy) Burgess and Avery Burgess, both of Washington, NC: “Sisters” Maxine Murphy, Newport News, VA, Elaine Coward, Kinston, NC, Cathy (Arthur) Bryant, La Grange, NC, and Debra (Moses) Jones, Kinston, NC: “Brothers” Willie (Dorothy) Moore, Windsor, VA, Ronald Moore, Kinston, NC and brother-in-law Henry Hawkins, Rocky Mount, NC.: 22 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, great nieces, nephews, great-nephews, cousins, and friends. She will also be missed by her fur baby, Reese.
