Sherrie Charlene Darden

Ms. Sherrie Shirleen Darden 64, of Greenville, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, in Greenville, N.C.

Sherrie Charlene Darden was born on May 5, 1959, to Shirleen and the late Rufus Mabery of Ayden NC .Sherrie lived with her grandparents the late James and Nina Darden till the age of 5 in the Pleasant Plain Community and later relocated to New York to join her mother and father. Sherrie received her education in New York and Baltimore but completed her formal education in the North Carolina Public School System where she graduated from Ayden-Grifton High School. In high school, Sherrie was well known. So well-known that she was called “Miss Hollywood” and “Movie Star”, because of her fashion sense and style. She would often come home from school, take a pattern, cut it out, and wear it to school the very next day. Sherrie was creative, and way ahead of her time. She was a fashion Diva and a one-of-a-kind model at Ayden-Grifton.

Most people saw Sherrie as small, pretty, and particular. But by no means was she fragile. Right after high school, Sherrie went into the U.S. Army and was stationed for 4 years in South Carolina. Once honorably discharged, Sherrie moved back to Baltimore as she decided to take her modeling career more seriously and modeled for the world-renowned Martin West of Baltimore Maryland. She would later win “Miss Neptune”, In Annapolis Maryland.

After having a successful career in modeling, Sherrie then developed a passion for dentistry where she was later employed as a dental assistant to Dr. EJ Colvin in Baltimore, MD. Sherrie worked over 40 years in the dental field as she pursued and obtained an associate degree from Pitt Community College.

Sherrie's next true love was her son, Tyler, who was her pride and joy. Being his mother brought her true happiness as it filled her with pleasure and gratification as she raised him in love and admiration for the Lord. Sherrie enjoyed being a football mom and was present at every game to support her star player. As you can imagine, she was overjoyed when Tyler started modeling. Sherrie would move in a heartbeat if it meant better opportunities for Tyler and his dreams. Sherrie and her husband Klaus “her soulmate”, always wanted to make sure he was well traveled and cultured.

She also had an over thirty-year love story with Klaus Walter Kunz that stood the test of time. In 2002, their love brought forth their daughter, baby Nyla Darden Kunz, who unfortunately went home to be with the angels alongside Sherrie’s brother, Rufus Mabery, Jr. and sister, Hazel Swaby.

Sherrie leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Tyler Darden of Greenville, NC; two grandsons, Jo'siah Kirk Newsome and Ma'Ziah Malik Newsome both of Dudley, NC; mother, Shirleen Mabery of Ayden, NC; her soulmate, Klaus Kunz of Tampa, FL; five brothers, James Darden of Winterville, NC, Jeremy Mabery of Raleigh, NC, Terrence Mabery of Greenville, NC, Cortez Williams of Raleigh, NC, and Zack Moore Jr. of New York; six sisters, Antoinette Mabery of Eden, NC, Doris Montgomery and Romaine Penn both of Baltimore, Maryland, Jacqueline Smith of Burgaw, NC, Helen Rawls and Debbie Hopkins both of Baltimore, MD; god brother, Gerald Gilbert of Little Washington, NC; two god sisters, Katonya Langley of New York City and Linda Bright of Griffin, NC; one uncle, Elder Willie Darden of Richmond, CA; four aunts, Caffie Darden of Wendell, NC, Beatrice Darden of Greenville, NC, Louvenia Barfield of Ayden, NC, and Patricia Darden of Richmond, CA; god aunt, Judy Ward of Greenville, NC; her loving puppies, Ginger, Mindy, and Pancake; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
