Mr. Robert Johnson Thigpen of Rocky Mount, N.C. entered into eternal rest on March 25, 2023.
Robert Johnson Thigpen, son of the late Jo Thigpen and the late Ira Bertha Ellis was born on May 18, 1934 in Wilson County, NC. He departed his earthly life on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at UNC - Nash Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC.
Robert was raised and attended school in Wilson County, NC. Robert, better known as “RT” or “Thig” retired from Merita Bakery with over 31 years of service. He was appointed as the Union Representative at Merita Bakery Local Union #503. He traveled to different conferences to obtain the knowledge he needed to fulfill his role successfully.
Robert had a love for antique cars, he also did work around the house and loved working in the yard. Another passion he had for years was raising pigeons, he had the cages in the back yard and trained those pigeons very well. If they flew away, he was not concerned because they would fly right back to the house.
Robert was preceded in death by his son’s Robert Thigpen Jr and Cecil Thigpen. His sister’s Annie Pearl Winfield, Laura Bell Pridgen, Lillie Earl Allen, MaryLee Thigpen, Bertha Ellis McCalop, and Patricia Louise Davis. Brother’s Calvin Thigpen, Grady Winstead, and Jesse Avent Winstead.
Robert leaves to honor his memories, his wife of 32 years Shirley J. Thigpen of the home in Sharpsburg, NC; six children Nina White, Rocky Mount, NC; Anthony Williams, Rocky Mount, NC; Bernetta Thigpen, Greensboro, NC; Carlos Barnes, Stockton, CA; Ralph Thigpen, Rocky Mount, NC; Kelvin Thigpen (Lucretia), Raleigh, NC; three sisters Christine Russell, Winterville,NC; Lana Gail Harrison, Pitsboro,NC; Mary Anne Sykes Ward (Reginald), Warrenton, VA; three brothers; James Author Thigpen, Atlanta , GA; Carl Winstead, Rocky Mount, NC; Patrick Wright (Thelma), Raleigh, NC; Mother-in-law, Anna Davis, Philadelphia, PA; two sisters-in- law, Bernadine Justice (Wayne) Williamsport, PA; Betty Arm- strong-Gill (Phillip), Albany, GA; one brother-in-law, Tyrone Davis, Philadelphia, PA; ten grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends, along with a special friend Mr. Keith Rogers.
