Mrs. Thelma King Bonner of Washington, N.C. entered into eternal rest on March 8,2021.
God in his infinite wisdom summoned Thelma King Bonner, the 5th child of Timothy and Eather Chapman King to change her residence. Thelma in humble obedience responded to Almighty God and peacefully succumbed to God's holy will on Monday, March 8, 2021 at 2:47pm in the presence of her family.
Thelma was born in Pinetown, North Carolina on August 15, 1935. She grew up in the small community of Hunter's Bridge and was formally educated at the Acre Colored School. She always spoke fondly of her teacher, Mrs. Rosa Oden. In 1949 she started dating Elmer Lee Bonner and after four years of courting, in 1953 Thelma married the love of her life. Their union was blessed with six children. After marriage they settled in their hometown to farm the land.
In 1958, young, eager, and strong-willed, Thelma and her loving husband decided to better their livelihood and moved North to New Haven, CT. Having accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age, Thelma was well-churched at St. Delight Church of Christ in Bath, North Carolina. Upon arrival in Connecticut, she placed her membership at Thomas Chapel Church of Christ, under the late Elder L.T. Thomas. Thelma used her gifts and talents to help found Little Rock Church of Christ, under Elder Joseph Douglass and was also trusted Mother under Bishop William Peterson, Pastor of Glorified Deliverance Center. Returning South, Thelma's boundless ministry as a faithful Church Mother and Choir Member of over 50 years, extended to serve at Mt. Hebron Church of Christ and New Birth Church of Christ. Her most recent call united her with the loving St. John Church of Christ family under Pastor, Rev. Russell Wilkins.
Thelma was a devoted housewife and mother. In her leisure time, she enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, crocheting, and doing Word Search puzzles. She was an active member of the Grace Martin Harwell Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Elmer Lee; her son, Elton Ray, of Bridgeport, CT; her siblings, Hilliard King, Walter King, Marshall Waters and Mary King.
She leaves to cherish her memories her children: Harold Wayne Bonner (Diane) of Garner, NC, Louetta Gardin of West Haven, CT, Dennis Murray Bonner (Sharon) of Ashland, VA, Francenia Bonner of Washington, NC, and Jacqueline Bonner of Portsmouth, VA; siblings: Ruth Windley of Chocowinity, NC, Correna Columbus and Butler King, both of Washington, NC, Elsie Jenkins of Wilmington, NC, and Lorena Allen of Hamden, CT; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives, extended church family and friends.
