Mrs. Rosa S. Oden of Pantego , N.C entered into eternal rest on February 12,2021.
Rosa Stanley Oden was born on April 10, 1917, to the union of Jerry Gaylord and Lottie Mae Stanley in Pantego, NC. She departed this life on February 12, 2021, at the ripe old age of 103.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Nathaniel Oden; a daughter, Christina Blount; and two granddaughters, Rosa Blount and Melba Reddick.
Rosa S. Oden accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age. She was a lifelong member of Zion Temple FWB Church where she served as a Treasurer for approximately thirty-five years.
She was united in holy matrimony with Nathaniel Oden in October of 1946 in South Carolina and their union was blessed with one son.
Rosa was an assistant principal at Davis School and retired after 37 years of working with students, co-workers, principals and superintendents. After her retirement, she anticipated a time for leisure reading, traveling and renewing old friendships.
Rosa graduated from Beaufort County High School in 1935. She is a 1937 graduate of Elizabeth City State Teachers College and attended the following universities and workshops: New York University, NY, North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC, A & T University, Greensboro, NC, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC, and East Carolina University, Greenville, NC.
Rosa’s employment history includes her teaching in Blount Creek, NC. In 1950, she returned to Elizabeth City State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She taught and left her legacy at the following schools: Beaufort County High School, Washington, NC, Laurinburg Institute, Laurinburg, NC, Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, NC, and Davis High School in Engelhard, NC, where she retired in 1984.
Rosa stated, “Thirty-seven years of helping others is quite fulfilling, yet a special thanks must go to the people of the Davis School Community where 20 of her teaching years were spent.”
In her leisure time, she enjoyed Word Search puzzles, going to watch Aaron play ball at Roanoke High School. She also was a member ofthe N.C. Teachers Association.
She leaves to cherish her memories: one son, Avron Oden and daughter-in-law, Vonda Oden; one daughter, Devora Frances of Newark, NJ; her grandchildren: Avron Jamie Oden, Aaron Oden, Redmon Blount, Sarah Lee, Gladys Blount and Marilyn Blount; three sisters and three brothers; a special niece, Barbara Rodman; a special nephew, James Lee Oden; and a cousin, Talmon Griffin.
