Mr. Edward Matthew Carter of 305-B Paige Dr. Greenville NC entered into eternal rest at his home surrounded by family.
Edward “John” Matthew Carter, 82, of Greenville, North Carolina, died on Tuesday, October 27, 2020, after a long battle with prostate cancer.
John was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Lucille Carter of Washington, N.C., his son, Baby Joe (who died at birth in 1958), and his siblings, Joe Carter, Wallace Parker, Jr. and Shirley Parker. After his parents died, he was raised by Burly and May Smith.
John later moved to Salisbury, N.C., where he worked at Erwin Junior High School as a bus driver and custodian. After retiring, he returned to Greenville, N.C.
He enjoyed working with patients at the Walter B. Jones Retirement Center in Greenville until his health began to decline. His favorite pastimes include: fast cars, wrestling, baking apple pies, preserving fruit, and especially cutting grass!
John is survived by his long-time partner, Shonie, and her children, Curtis (Amanda) and Antwane; grandchildren: Marcus, Kendra, CJ and Kyia; and a Godson, Julian Chapman, all of Greenville, N.C.; his daughter, Tonya Carter of Salisbury, N.C.; two sisters, Elizabeth Jean and Georgia Bell Parker, both of Ayden, N.C. He spoke fondly and often of his cousins, Johnnie Mae Carmen and the late Sam Carter.
He is also survived by his children from his first marriage to Amanda Lee Barrett Carter: Edward, Jr. (Pearlene), James, Tommy, Deborah, Trina, Shelia and Toronto, all of Greenville, N.C., Jacqueline of Durham, N.C. and Romyner (Carla) of New Bern, N.C.; sixteen grandchildren: Leon, Shaconda, Mookie, El’Twoyne, El’Shaun, Kendra, Shinterria and Samaunee, all of Greenfille, N.C., Octavia of Wilson, N.C., Antonio of Texas, Jessica, Brittany and Alexandra, all of Durham, N.C., Monquel and Victoria (Tyrell) of Raleigh, N.C.; and twenty-five great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
