The Life & Legacy of Leon “Pudden” Boyd
Leon Dennard Boyd, affectionately known as “Pudden,” was born October 21, 1959, to the union of David Boyd, Sr. and Martha Boyd in Greenville, NC.
Leon received his early education in Pitt County Schools and later obtained his GED at Pitt Community College in Winterville, NC. Through his unwavering commitment to fire and rescue, he completed a remarkable amount of training and certifications.
Leon accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age. He was united with Cedar Grove Missionary Church where he served as a Jr. Usher, Sweet Hope Free Will Baptist Church, St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church, and most recently, Breakthrough Revival Community Church.
Leon was united in holy matrimony with Deedra L. Hart on September 14, 2015, in Greenville, NC. Their union was blessed with a blended family of three children.
Over his many years in Emergency Services, Leon was a loving husband, father, grandfather, firefighter, and a friend to many. He has been an active member of Bell Arthur Fire Department since 2016, having previously worked with multiple other fire agencies, most notably Eastern Pines Fire/Rescue where he served as an Assistant Chief, along with Pitt County Emergency Management and Pitt County Sheriff’s Office where he was a telecommunicator - and commonly referred to as one of the best dispatchers Pitt County has ever had. In addition to his public service, “Pudden” was a skillful and dedicated Truck Driver, most recently employed with Ryder and Laughinghouse Farms.
In his leisure, “Pudden” enjoyed watching sports. He was a "die-hard" fan of UNC basketball and the Dallas Cowboys. You could often hear him saying, "How ‘bout those Cowboys...yessirrrr!" In addition to sports, Leon enjoyed chopping barbeque, taking chances with the NC Lottery and local sweepstakes, and bonding with his grandson Mason over their love for all things Fire and Rescue. “Pudden” was a mentor to many and loved by everyone he came in contact with.
Leon “Pudden” Boyd departed his life on December 13, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, David Boyd, Sr. and Martha Boyd; uncle, James Reese; and aunt, Bloomer Reese; and brothers, Daniel Clemons, Dwight Boyd, James Boyd, and Linwood Boyd.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife, Deedra L. Hart; children, Brooks Howard, Carla Boyd, and Aharii Thomas; grandchildren, Mason Anthony and a granddaughter soon to be born, Brielle Maye Howard; siblings, David Boyd, Louis Boyd, Mary Boyd, Deloris Gibbs, and Beverly Lawrence (David); and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
He will truly be missed by all.
