Mr. George Burgess of Washington, N.C. entered into eternal rest on April 29, 2023.

George Allen Burgess departed this earth and entered eternal life on April 29, 2023, surrounded by loved ones at ECU Health Beaufort Hospital, Washington, NC.

George was born October 12, 1959, in Washington, NC, to the late Henry Champ Burgess, Sr and Versia M. Burgess, surviving.  He was the seventh child of ten siblings and was preceded in death by his father, Henry Champ Burgess, Sr., his brothers Steven Burgess, William Burgess, and daughter Lynette Pope Dixon.

On August 6, 2011, George married his friend and sweetheart, Gertrude Pope. This union led them to become a blended family of six children.

George attended and graduated from Washington High School on June 10, 1977. He was employed by ABC Supply Company and ASCO. He later decided to enroll at Beaufort Community College and obtained a degree in Liberal Arts in 2013. During the time he was enrolled at Beaufort Community College, he would also make sure that “our Dad” was fed and changed before leaving for school.

George was a faithful member of St John Missionary Baptist Church and attended regularly until his health began to fail.  His personal hobbies were playing basketball and watching football. He was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan.  

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Gertrude P. Burgess; daughter, Brittany Hopkins; sons, Clifton Pope, Jr., Anthony Pope, Arron Dunlop, Ricky Dunlop and Quincy Dunlop; grandchildren, Zyona Sheff, Zakai Sheff, Zé Sheff, Davion Pope, Nijah Pope, Maquaih Pope,Raden Pope, Eljah Pope, Myra Pope, Jeremiah Pope, Cylie Dunlop, Ricky, Dunlop, Jr., Romeo Dunlop, Journee Dunlop and Aliyah Pope; his Mother, Versia M. Burgess;. five sisters.

Verna Smith, Hampton, VA, Betsy (Alonzo) Windley, New Bern, NC, Victoria “Ann” Deas, Washington, NC, Callie (James) Brown, Plymouth, NC and Theresa (Benson) Wiggins, Williamston, NC; four brothers, Willie “JT” Burgess, Rocky Mount, NC, Henry (Roberta) Burgess, Jr., Durham, NC, Kelly (Dorothy) Burgess and Avery Burgess, both of Washington, NC.

aunts, Maxine Murphy, Newport News, VA, Elaine Coward, Kinston, NC, Cathy (Arthur) Bryant, La Grange, NC, and Debra (Moses) Jones, Kinston, NC; uncles, Willie (Dorothy) Moore, Windsor, VA, Ronald Moore, Kinston, NC and Henry Hawkins, Rocky Mount, NC.

sisters in law, Diana (Leroy) Jenkins, Rita (Ronnie) Hines, Juanita (Leroy) Sanders, and Linda (Willie) Lane; brother-in-law, Quincy (Tonya) Hines, Jr., and a host of nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, cousins and friends.
