Elder Dr. Luther Sonny Burroughs, Jr., 74, of Washington, NC, passed away on Monday, November 4, 2024, at ECU Health Medical Center, Greenville, NC.

Dr. Burrough’s Legacy

    Luther Sonny Burroughs, Jr., affectionally known as “Sonny” was born on March 17, 1950, in New York, New York. He departed this life on November 4, 2024. Luther was born into the loving arms of the late Luther and Mabel Burroughs. They preceded him in death along with his brother Raymond Burroughs.

   Luther was a man of unity, strength, and love. He was married to Bishop Nancy Lee Scott on June 21, 1969, after dating of 3 years. Bishop Nancy Burroughs was the daughter of Helen Mccullough.

   Sonny’s first job was with the New York Life Insurance Company. He later found employment with the New York Telephone Company now known as Verizon and was employed there for 36 years. Luther started serving God as an Usher at Full True Gospel Tabernacle and was very serious about his calling and was later ordained as a Deacon at Temple of Faith and Hope. There he served faithfully with his wife, Nancy, who was pastor and founder of both churches. In 1996, he attended Manhattan Bible Institute under the leadership of Dr. Richard Christie, in Harlem, NY. In 2001, Deacon Burroughs assisted his wife to open Burroughs Divinity Bible School. He earned his Doctorate degree at that time and continued learning and teaching others. Dr. Luther Burroughs favorite class while teaching was Black Presence in the Bible. In 2000, Luther assisted his wife, Bishop Nancy Burroughs in re-opening the original Old Loving Union Baptist Church on Wootentown Road. On July 27, 2024, Luther was ordained an Elder by Apostle Dr. Mitchell H. Hudson. Elder Burroughs was still serving diligently at Loving Union Baptist when God called him home.

      Luther was a dedicated member of the community. At the tender age of seventy, he was a head coach and assisted other coaches at Washington’s Little League Baseball. He coached summer and fall Ball. He also supported all other activities in the city with his wife, Dr. Nancy Burroughs. Sonny was a dedicated and faithful fan of the NY Mets and NY Giants.

      Luther leaves to cherish his memory; a loving devoted wife of 55 years, Nancy; two sons, Derron Burroughs (Sandra) of Washingtonville, NY and Luther Burroughs III (Tonya) of  Sylvania, GA; two daughter, Jenelle Burroughs of Bronx, NY and Darnell Holley of Georgia; fifteen grandchildren, Danielle, Princess, Nathaniel, Danie, Dominque, Zaire, Angelique, Dante, Zaak, Naneq, Diajo, Diasia, Dion, Jaelen, and Julien; sixteen great grandchildren, Austin, Terrence, Taylor, Tiara, Nate Jr., Etan, Nehemiah, Ronavalona, Amora, Daquan, Travonte, Parell, Royal, King, Bella, and Brooklyn; one brother, Kenneth Burroughs of Brooklyn, NY; two sisters, Marilyn Burroughs and Vernice Burroughs both of Brooklyn, NY; two sister in laws, Susie James of Georgia; Ann Ashwood of New York, NY; one brother in law, Dewitt Rigby of Georgia; three loving aunts, Eloise Harvin, Nellie Moore, Geraldine Mccullough; two devoted cousins, Curley Marie Green and Mary Smith; six goddaughters, May Smith, Apostle Linda Gary, Dottie Pass, Dr. Caroline William, Pastor Debra Gallimore, and Sharon Coleman; two god sisters, Dr. V. Miller and Dr. Danessa Casado; one godson, Apostle Jackie Gary; two grand godchildren, Nyla and Zion; three devoted neighbors, Bonnie Jean, Jim and Emma Kuras; two god families, Shelly Bryant’s Family and the Martinez Family; and a host of other relatives and many friends.
