The Life & Legacy of Dennis Ray

Dennis Ray Hilliard, born on April 29, 1956, in Tarboro, North Carolina, to Estee Hilliard. Dennis lived a life filled with love and laughter with his family and even his friends. He attended Edgecombe County Public Schools before embarking on a career at Henderson Lumber Company and Long Manufacturing. In pursuit of new opportunities, Dennis moved to Newport News, Virginia, where he spent the majority of his adult years, creating memories and lifelong connections. In 2012, he returned to his beloved hometown of Tarboro.

Known for his vibrant personality and infectious joy, Dennis was the life of every gathering. His signature phrase, "Top of the line!" encapsulated his approach to life—one lived fully and with enthusiasm. His boundless love for his family was unwavering, and even as his health declined, Dennis maintained his positive spirit until the end.

On Saturday, October 12, 2024, Dennis peacefully transitioned to eternal life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Dennis was preceded in death by his mother, Estee Hilliard; his sister, Pauline Hilliard Pettaway; and his brother, Victor Hilliard.

He leaves behind to cherish his memories: his daughter, Denise Johnson (TaShauwn) of Princeville, North Carolina; son, Dennis Earl Williams (Adelya) of Raleigh, North Carolina; two brothers, Jimmie Hilliard (Lola) of Princeville, North Carolina and William Hilliard of Durham, North Carolina; three sisters, Doretha Hilliard of Washington, D.C., Dianne Heath (Steve) of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and Sandra Lawrence (Derrick) of Wendell, North Carolina; his beloved grandchildren, Serenity, TaSyiah, and Jahmiah, all of Princeville, North Carolina; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; to include special cousins, Linda, Carolyn, Donald, Angela, and Jerome who held a sibling-like bond with him.

Dennis was particularly loved and cherished by his devoted and loving niece, Loretta Hilliard, alongside his devoted and loving companion, Barbara Bishop, whose care and companionship enriched his later years.

Dennis Ray Hilliard’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him!
