The Life and Legacy of David “Sonny Boy” Ward
On the morning of December 24, 2024, Mr. David Earl Ward Sr., also known as Sonny Boy, passed away at ECU Health in Little Washington, NC. He was born on January 29, 1947, to Jimmy and Lolli Ward. David was married to Lula Ward.
David made a profound and intentional commitment to wholly dedicate his life to God, embarking on a transformative journey of faith that reshaped his core values, infused new meaning into his purpose, and guided every action he took.
David attended Bethel Union High School and dedicated many years to working at the Caroline Leaf Tobacco Factory, which focused on skill development and building interpersonal relationships. During his time there, he not only enhanced his skills but also formed significant friendships that contributed to his personal growth and well-being.
Later in his career, David took a position at J.H. Rose High School, where he made a lasting impact on countless students. His passion for education and commitment to inspiring young minds left a profound legacy. After many fulfilling years in education, David chose to retire, bringing to a close a career marked by inspiration and compassion.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmy and Lolli Ward; stepmother, Lenora Ward; brothers, Arthur Lee Ward, Jimmy Ward Jr., Robert Lee Ward, Jarvis Spain, and John Henry Ward, Jessie James Ward; sisters, Shirley Ward and Cora Allen.
Mr. David Earl (aka Sonny Boy) Ward leaves to cherish his memories, wife of forty years, Lula Ward of the home; biological son, David Earl Ward, Jr. (Carlene) of Greenville NC; sons, Curtis Credle (Lourdes) of NY, Charles Credle of Washington, NC, Ricardo Hopkins of Washington, NC; daughter, Kim Cox (Willie) of Aurora, NC; grandchildren, Darrius Ward (Shirra) (aka Boo Boo), Dasia Ward (aka Fatty), La’Cohonya Marks all of Greenville, NC, Dyshema Ross of Richland Hills, GA; great grandchildren, Javien Ward of Greenville, NC; siblings, Judy Mae Ward of Greenville, NC, Myra Vernell Ward of Washington, DC, Lillian Ruth Ward of Greenville NC, Maggie Tibbs (William) of Bowie, Maryland; one aunt, Delores Adams “Dollbaby” of Greenville, NC; sister-in-laws, Edith Biggs (Bryant) of Washington, NC, and Rose Cox of Washington, NC; a special brother in law, Larry Credle of Wilson, NC; along with a host of grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
