Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. Prov.31:10
Beulah Carraway Moore was born on April 29, 1931, in Lenoir County to the union of Hubert Carraway and Beulah Dawson. She was the second oldest child of four. She spent her formative years in the rural areas of LaGrange – including Bucklesberry and Jason, NC.
Life was hard for the family. Her father died at a very young age, leaving her mother – at age 21 – to raise four children under the age of six! Mama said her mother taught her to be industrious early in life and instilled in her the work ethic she had until the day she died.
She attended Bear Creek Elementary School. After graduatingfrom LaGrange Colored School in 1950, she relocated andacquired gainful employment between New Jersey & New York while staying with her older sister, Mary Lois.
MaMa enrolled in Elizabeth City State Teachers College in September of 1953 and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Intermediate Education in 1957.
MaMa married her high school sweetheart in 1959. To this union, three children were born – Keith, Stephanie & Deborah.
MaMa was gainfully employed in the Lenoir County Schools and Kinston City Schools for thirty-three years. During this period, she attended Howard University in Washington, DC, where she specialized in Remedial Reading. She furthered her education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and East Carolina University where she received certification as an Education Specialist for Educable Mentally Handicapped children.
MaMa attended Lenoir Community College where she developed her many gifts which included: public relations, sociology, arts and crafts, crocheting, dress making, quilting, floral design, calligraphy and cake decorating!!
MaMa was always busy. She was a member of St. Augustus AME Zion Church where she affiliated with the L.C. Perry Missionary Circle; a Life Member of the NAACP; a member of the National Education Association; a member of the Elizabeth City State University Alumni; a Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and a current member of the Iota Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated where she proudly pledged when her oldest daughter was a member in that chapter. Other professional memberships and civic organizations include: Association of Retired School Personnel, Association of Retarded Citizens, Les Torchettes Civic Club, Les Bonnes Amie Civic Club, Banneker Literary & Literacy Social Club, Neuse Quilters Guild, Sutton-Moseley & Maye-Wooten Family Reunion Committees, and many more volunteer activities too numerable to mention.
One of her most enjoyable activities since the age of 70 was being the Diabetic Facilitator for the Diabetic Support Group for Lenoir Memorial Hospital (now UNC Lenoir Healthcare) where she organized monthly meetings to teach and inform others how to live with diabetes successfully.
MaMa was preceded in death by her parents, Beulah and Hubert Carraway; siblings: Mary Lois Carraway Jackson, Ethel Mae Carraway Patrick and Curtis Carraway.
MaMa was a member of St. Augustus AME Zion Church in Kinston, where she raised her children. In this capacity, she was an active member of the L.C. Perry Missionary Circle, for her entire adult life. She was a genuine servant for God. She looked for the best in others and made it her lifetime mission to encourage, build up and love unconditionally. God blessed her with the gift of giving/teaching!!
